I didn’t know much about Senator Kamala Harris, Joe Biden’s pick for VP, but I’m learning her. So is the GOP propaganda machine. The Trump campaign and their supporters in media haven’t decided on an attack strategy yet. They are simultaneously calling her an extreme left wing politician and an establishment cutout. Not surprising considering these are the same folks who doubled down on Trump’s statement that he has done more for Black people than “possibly” Abraham Lincoln” on the one hand and that Trump is a deeply religious Christian on the other. Their schizoprenia will continue right up until the election Biden-Harris ticket.

As reported by all major news outlets (for example, here, here and here) Joe Biden named Kamala Harris, the junior senator from California, as his running mate. I do not know much about Ms. Harris’ policies but so long as she is a person of character and intelligence I’m good with his choice. As I learn more about her (after all, I am an informed voter) I’ll know where we agree and where we disagree. But here’s the thing. I have cautioned against the pitfalls of being a single issue voter. Yet here I am taking the position that character is of fundamental import. I am a witness to the rule of a person completely devoid of character and can say with absolute certainty that no position on any single issue compensates for the lack character. Character will determine whether AND how a person executes the responsibilities that come with the office. When a person lacks character as Trump so evidently does, this:
“I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.” – The President’s Oath of Office
becomes this:
“I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will not faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, not preserve, not protect and not defend the Constitution of the United States.”
Donald Trump, the Capo-in-Chief, at today’s CoVID press conference (a ritual that has become more farce than informational) gave us another lesson in alternative history.
“The closest thing is in 1917, they say, the great pandemic. It certainly was a terrible thing where they lost anywhere from 50 to 100 million people…..Probably ended the second World War, all the soldiers were sick.”
Not many caught that he was wrong when he called it the “1917” pandemic instead of the “1918” influenza pandemic as historians refer to it. But most of us grew up knowing about when World War II ended (1945). And almost all of us know that 1945 is not 1917. Of course facts never stopped Trump from falsely claiming credit for a victory that has yet to materialize, exaggerating his accomplishments to the point of absurdity or telling one more lie to his slavishly gullible base.
